There are concerns that the Trump administration will order the National Park Service to relax some of its hunting and fishing regulations/NPS file

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials, at the direction of Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, are moving to open seven of their refuges to hunting and fishing, a move spurring concern that National Park System units could be ordered to move in the same direction.

It was just about a year ago that then-Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke directed the agencies under his purview to defer wildlife and fisheries matters to states. If the Fish and Wildlife Service, or the National Park Service, had more stringent regs than those of the states in which they were located, he said, they should relax their regulations.

In issuing that directive, Zinke said he was reaffirming a 1983 policy that gave states the authority “to exercise…

Hunting and trapping foxes could soon become legal in Madison County. The North Carolina Trappers Association has proposed the change.

The group said regulated trapping protects properties, prevents the spread of diseases and protects animals’ habitats.

But a local animal rights group is concerned about the proposal.

“If you can put a trap out there, that could catch in it a pet dog, a pet cat, children. There’s no reason for it,” said Patricia Ruscoe, of Friends of Madison County Animals.

Madison County commissioners are expected to decide whether or not to adopt the proposal at their Aug. 13 meeting at Asheville–Buncombe Technical Community College.

The animals that will survive climate change

Image

Exposing the Big Game's avatarThe Extinction Chronicles

With one in every four species facing extinction, which animals are the best equipped to survive the climate crisis? (Spoiler alert: it’s probably not humans).

“I don’t think it will be the humans. I think we’ll go quite early on,” says Julie Gray with a laugh. I’ve just asked Gray, a plant molecular biologist at the University of Sheffield, which species she thinks would be the last ones standing if we don’t take transformative action on climate change. Even with our extraordinary capacity for innovation and adaptability, humans, it turns out, probably won’t be among the survivors.

This is partly because humans reproduce agonisingly slowly and generally just one or two at a time – as do some other favourite animals, like pandas. Organisms that can produce many offspring quickly may have a better shot at avoiding extinction.

It may seem like…

Ebola and the ongoing global health emergency that no one is noticing

Ebola-replicating-on-a-cell

On Wednesday the World Health Organizationdeclared the ongoing — and now year-old — Ebola outbreak a global health emergency.

The emergency declaration comes after a man became sick and brought the virus to the Congolese city of Goma, a highly populated transit hub with an international airport and next door to Rwanda. As it stands today, the current Ebola outbreak has surpassed 2,500 cases and 1,500 deaths concentrated largely in two provinces in eastern Congo.

The response effort has been hampered by a deadly mix of armed conflict, distrust, and lack of medical resources. Less than half of the affected population trusts the government and Ebola responders; armed groups have even killed responders. Public health experts expect the outbreak to continue into…

A South Dakota man has lost his hunting and fishing privileges for 12 years, was fined $3,400 and had to forfeit his rifle for wasting the meat of a black bear he killed in Colorado in 2017.

The Greeley Tribune reports a Colorado Parks and Wildlife hearing officer sentenced 58-year-old Robert Stalley of Pierre, South Dakota on June 25 after considering the violation and Stalley’s efforts to mislead investigators.

Investigators say Stalley had valid hunting licenses and killed a deer and a bear near Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

Wildlife Officer Jack Taylor says Stalley took the venison home but…

WIth a deadly deer disease spreading, there are new concerns that it could affect people, too.

In February of this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning about Chronic Wasting Disease (also known as CWD or the more common “zombie deer disease”) in connection to deer, elk and moose.

It can take more than a year before an infected animal develops “zombie deer disease” symptoms, which can include drastic weight loss (wasting), stumbling, listlessness and other neurologic symptoms. CWD can…

The chart that defines our warming world

Exposing the Big Game's avatarThe Extinction Chronicles

Is this the simplest way to show what is meant by global warming? The chart below organises all the countries of the world by region, time and temperature. The trend is unmistakeable.

Climate Stripes

Each line of coloured pixels is the temperature record of an individual nation within its region, stacked one atop the other. Blues are cooler years; the reds are warmer. The far left is 1900; the far right is the present day.

The entire planet has got hotter, increasingly so in recent decades.

This global “Climate Stripes” graphic is the work of Prof Ed Hawkins at Reading University who has sought…
